Youth Development Courses

Our senior instructors have developed this fantastic range of Lake District based courses aimed at riders aged 12 to 18. There are no set departure dates for these trips – you need to find a group (usually 8 people) through school, family or friends then we’ll put on a trip tailored to your needs. One common thread to all our courses is that they are always run by the very best professional instructors, qualified to the highest level through the SMBLA.
The course progression we have planned is as follows:
Part 1 – Mountain Bike Skills
This course covers the core mountain biking skills using a series of coaching session that get us right out into the Lake District mountains. We start day 1 with a whole range of skills development sessions to build balance and bike control, then progress onto technical climbing and descending as we head out for a good ride. Day 2 is a more flowing journey with some stops to develop the riders in whatever ways are needed. With small groups and expert instructors we can always be flexible in selecting the right terrain and right tuition to make this a great weekend for everyone.
Part 2 – Adventure Biking Skills
This course is very similar to our adult Backcountry Skills Course. Depending upon the requirements of your group we can adjust the focus of the course, but we’ll always be sure to teach some valuable riding, navigatin, planning and group management skills in between enjoying a fantastic two days of mountain riding.
Part 3 – Cairngorms Expedition
Taking young mountain bikers into real wilderness is a fantastic experience for them and this will probably be the first time your group has done anything like this. We can either offer this as a fully organised trip or, more suitable for youth development, we can give you a structured programme to guide them through the planning process. This will help them to find a route, design menus, select equipment and much more. We will then support the journey and make sure the group have a truly remarkable, but safe, adventure.
Part 4 – Leadership
Many of our instructors are tutors for the Scottish Mountain Bike Leader Award scheme and we are licensed to offer professional leadership training and certification. When young riders have developed their personal skills and begun to assist others with their learning this qualification is a great way to help them develop. The 2-day course we offer can be followed up with a 1-day assessment once the candidates are 18 or over. This will give them a Trail Cycle Leader Award, a highly regarded and nationally recognised leadership award (note that they must also join BC/SMBLA and pass a first aid course to gain full accreditation.) |
