Ready to ROAM - 22 January 08
The accreditation scheme ROAM is a mark of quality, professionalism and adherence to best practice. As a provisional ROAM licence holder CycleActive has already paved the way for full accreditation on our final inspection visit at the end of February 08. We fully expect this to confirm what we already know – that our standards of organisation, safety and instruction are second to none.

Mountain Mayhem brings in CycleActive coaches again for 10th anniversary event.
The expertise of CycleActive’s instructional team has been recognised once again by the mighty Pat Adams, organiser of the prestigious Mountain Mayhem event. He has asked us to return and run Mini Mayhem for him once again – the event within the main arena which we created in 2006 for young riders.
Mini Mayhem was designed to inspire, train and encourage youngsters to become better, more confident cyclists. It was a huge success for everyone, with children coming away full of new skills and enthusiasm, while parents could see the true value of expert coaching and know their children were in safe hands.
This year Mayhem is going to be bigger and better than ever, with new sponsor T-Mobile headlining the event in this, its 10th anniversary year. We’re proud to be a part of it and look forward to that last weekend in June.

New Cairngorm Epic
How often do you get to bike right around one of the greatest mountain ranges on earth? Or ride 5-days point-to-point on amazing trails through pristine, British wilderness? That was the aim of our Lakeland Epic when we launched it back in 2003, and now we've gone north to do it again, in The Scottish Cairngorms.
This trip follows the successful format of our lakeland tour, using good accommodation, bag transfers each day and professional leadership to allow you to focus on enjoying the superb riding. Due to the wildness of The Cairngorms we'll have our own 4x4 support truck moving bags and bringing a second guide in to ride with the group during part of each day to offer more flexibility and support.
What Mountain Bike magazine wanted to cover the route so earlier this year we went up there for a training course with leadership guru Matt Healey – check it out in the July 2006 issue. The magazine and photographer Andy MacCandlish let us use their images for our website – check out the pictures, tour info and gallery now More

Coaching the Olympic Talent Team - 6/3/06
Last weekend a group of the very best young mountains bikers in Britain came to The Lake District for a course run by CycleActive. The training camp was the first we’ve run in conjunction with the British Cycling Olympic Talent Team, and they were properly impressed with the guiding, coaching and quality of our service. “Their unique brand of MTB leading was pitched at exactly the right level for our riders” said Coach Chris Furber, “it was great to see our riders show such progress, and have such a good time, in one weekend”
There were two clear highlights for the young riders during the weekend – for many it was their first time riding The Lakes, and they were just amazed at how good the biking is here. They also really enjoyed the skills coaching sessions we ran for them, covering all kinds of core skills and even race-speed tube changes!
For us it was great to work with some of the UK’s top athletes - the ones we’re hoping will win medals for us in 2012. After this first success we’re now talking to British Cycling coaches about further courses for the 2006/7 season.

Guides skills put us on the cover - 19/1/06
For 7 issues our guides Chris Ford and Liam Scott have been writing features for What Mountain Bike magazine. The series, which has been a huge success, focusses on all the skills you need to ride in "Real Mountains".
To shoot the pictures for "Rocky Terrain Techniques" and "Switchbacks & Drops" the pair headed out to our Spanish centre with top photographer Seb Rogers. The combination of amazing terrain, perfect weather and top notch kit supplied by Specialized, Giant and Endura made our guys look so presentable that they ended up on the front cover!
The full set of images is quite breathtaking - if you've not been to our Spanish centre yet these will have you checking the Easyjet website for cheap flights to Alicante in no time. To see them pick up the February 2006 issue of What Mountain Bike and turn to page 120. Don't forget that if you want to take pictures of this quality you can now sign up for our mountain bike photography courses run by Seb Rogers himself, alongside Chris and Liam.

Tour de France Special Break - 8/12/05
In 2006 we’ll be running week-long Alpine road riding holidays based in the heart of the French Alps, at Morzine. As well as some classic week-long trips in June we’ll have a special departure in July to tie in with the Tour de France.
On tour day we’ll head out to climb the tour route on marshalled, empty roads, through the massing crowds, until we find a great spot in the mountains to watch the riders pour through. It’s a spectacle not to be missed, and will be a highlight of a week filled with many more superb rides.

What Mountain Bike in Spain - 6/12/05
CycleActive guides Liam Scott and Chris Ford were commission to write a whole series for WMB on developing skills to ride in the mountains. The early features focussed on bike setup, expedition planning, clothing and equipment choices. The latest features look more closely at the riding, and the magazine wanted to get some amazing shots of the guys in action. This meant winter sunshine, so we sent them off to Spain with top snapper Seb Rogers.
The features are covering three areas – rocky terrain, switchbacks and drops. There’s nothing like our trails in The Marina Alta Mountains for all of these so the combination of great weather and great terrain made for some superb photo opportunities.
The features will appear in the 2006 January and February issues of WMB, and we’ve been tipped off that one may even appear on the front cover very soon... |

Skippers Canyon Spectacular -6/12/05
One amazing mountain bike ride in New Zealand is the descent into Skippers Canyon, just outside Queenstown. This trip is spectacular in its own right, even when you have to put up with the haul out up a winding road by minibus. For our group tours there’ll be no bussing out though, because on the way to the ride you’ll have been fitted up with wetsuits by our rafting outfitters, who’ll be ready and waiting for you as soon as you get off the bike.
While the bikes go their separate way in the minibus you’ll be locked in battle with the raging river, rafting through a whole range of rapids including one breathtaking ride through a pitch black tunnel on your way back to Queenstown. Don’t worry, no prior experience is needed, just a sense of adventure!

Italian champion teams up with CycleActive - 25/10/05
Lake Garda local and top Italian enduro rider Carlo Argentieri will be guiding alongside CycleActive’s instructors in 2006. But Carlo is more than a guy who rides 540km in 24hrs (as he did in his last event!) – in line with CycleActive’s recruitment policy he’s also an Italian Cycling federation coach and instructor, both on-road and off-road.
Our own tour planning Director, Chris Ford, was really enthusiastic about Carlo joining the team, “For 2006 we want to have 2 guides on our mountain bike tours to offer more ride choices. We also want to work with the best local experts in each destination. Carlo’s involvement hits the mark perfectly.”
Check out the Lake Garda week and Freeride weekend tours, plus our Family trip that’s new for 2006 |
