BikeRadar Live is teaming up with a host of leading names for the UK’s biggest cycling festival, taking place on the weekend of 11-12 July 2010 at Brands Hatch in Kent. The first of these partnerships is with CycleActive, with the UK’s leading cycle instructors returning to the event to deliver their unique brand of skills training to experts, novices and kids.
CycleActive attended the inaugural BikeRadar Live show last year, and will be expanding on their offering for 2010 with a new ‘Pump and Jump’ area, as well as the successful junior skills area and skills clinic for mountain bikers.
The Pump and Jump free sessions will teach mountain bikers all about flying off lips, small jumps, kickers and tabletops. The hour-long sessions will take place on a custom built pump-n-jump coaching track, and are guaranteed to transform the skills of mountain bikers, enabling them to put them to the test at the rest of BikeRadar Live.
In the spirit of getting the whole family cycling, CycleActive will again be running the ‘Junior Skills with Islabikes’ sessions. The 20-minute skills sessions will cover all kinds of biking skills, and at the same time children will be able to try out some of the latest machines from the Islabikes range. The skilled, motivated and relaxed style of coaching from the CycleActive experts is ideal for building confidence in young cyclists.
Developing those skills further, CycleActive founder Chris Ford will also be running a one-to-one skills clinic, where he will help mountain bikers to identify any problems or issues that riders can’t get to grips with. The individual sessions will run throughout the weekend, and will be free of charge.
Grant Norris, Event Manager for BikeRadar Live said:
“We’re delighted that CycleActive are returning to BikeRadar Live again, the feedback that we got for the skills sessions last year from cyclists and families was great. Encouraging children to ride better, smoother, safer and with greater confidence is really key to BikeRadar Live, as we equip the cyclists of the future with the skills that they need.
The Pump and Jump area should be really fantastic, mountain bikers are sure to pick up loads of exciting skills and tips and it’ll certainly be great to watch!”
For more details on SMBLA leadership courses with CycleActive visit:
The governing body for mountain bike leader training – the SMBLA – has appointed a national team of their most exceptionally talented tutors to act as best practice advisors and mentors. Chris Ford of CycleActive was the only tutor to be selected from the Northwest of England. Along with the other four successful tutors – based in the South East, Wales, the North-west and Scotland – Chris will be working on the development and refinement of each leadership course delivered by the SMBLA.
“The selection process was rigorous, they wanted to be certain that the people on this team could deliver to a high standard and they looked at everything I’ve done as a cyclist, leader and tutor in the last 15 years – it was intense!” explained Chris.
A significant part of the mentor role will be to deliver leader education courses (such as the hugely popular Trail Cycle Leader course) to consistently high standards, and to use these as a blueprint for new tutors. Having a national mentor team also creates a forum for pooling ideas and resources – something mountain bike leadership needs as the demand for leaders in schools, clubs, outdoor centres etc. grows every year.
Chris’ is probably one of the most in-demand leadership educators and coaches right now. His CycleActive courses bring in clients from major national organisations like Sustrans, Outward Bound, the police and the armed forces. He has also created bespoke educational programmes for PGL – the UK’s largest supplier of outdoor education to young people.
Trek 2010 Selection for CycleActive
Lance Armstrong, Liam Killeen, Tracey Moseley….some of the most famous international and national names in cycling and mountain biking are linked to Trek bikes. For 2010, for the third year running, CycleActive will join the list of riders and teams supported by one of the most progressive cycle companies in the world.
Trek’s support for CycleActive instructors and leaders is a real credit to our team – it’s a true badge of quality to be recognised by, and associated with, such a well known and respected brand. Working with the UK’s largest Trek dealership, Wheelbase of Staveley, our team were able to analyse each bike in detail and make the perfect selections for the riding and guiding they do.
These are the bikes we’ll be riding this season:
