Cycle holidays & tours – Europe – Secret Slovenia & Austria

  Holiday Facts
There’s a timeless beauty about alpine houses built in the old style, with hand carved cedar tiles instead of roof slates, a giant lime tree in the garden to protect from lightning, and meadows all around without a holiday cottage or ski hotel in sight. This is what our secret corner of Slovenia offers – and with beautiful rolling tracks and backroads linking villages, lakes and countryside, it’s a haven for cycle exploration.

Tour Highlights:
  • Farmhouse accommodation with panoramic views
  • Discover hidden alpine villages and unspoilt countryside
  • Delicious local produce at mountain restaurant lunch stops
  • Expert local guides with in-depth local knowledge

This holiday takes you out into the hidden landscapes to the north, east south and west of our lovely farmhouse on the Slovenian / Austrian border. You’ll explore at a relaxed pace in the company of expert guides and often with vehicle support too. Our two guides will not only show you the routes and keep things running smoothly, they also know this area intimately and can really bring it to life for you.

The routes we have chosen show the true variety and beauty of this region. There are riverside cycle paths that wind through huge sunflower meadows, valley routes that take you into the shadow of impressive, craggy peaks and ridge rides that open up new panoramas at every turn.

To fuel the cycling you’ll be superbly well catered for, with fresh, often organic local produce being used at our farmhouse and in many other cafes, restaurants and farms that we stop at for lunch. Locally made cheeses, cured meats, fresh produce and even Pieter’s famous “honey firewater” (only for the spirit lovers!) will give you a fabulous flavour of a region proud of its cultural, and culinary, heritage.

One part of this heritage is mining, and an option on this holiday is to experience an underground bike ride. Issued with mining lamps, riding on a level track, you’ll pedal straight under Little-Petza mountain from one side to the other. Along the way we stop to explore some of the caves, and get an explanation of how this region lived and worked by a former miner.

The accommodation for this holiday is a beautiful, traditional Slovenian farmhouse. As well as great rooms and locally produced, organic food there’s a pool, large open lawns, spacious deck and stunning views across the rolling green valleys. It’s the perfect place to come back to after a day out exploring, or a lovely place to relax if you decide to skip a ride and just enjoy the surroundings.

On the last full day of the holiday (Friday) we will transfer you to Ljubljana, so you can enjoy a day in this historic river city. Your final night will be in a comfortable city hotel, letting you sample the restaurants, nightlife and culture before we take you to the airport the next day.
