Youth Development
Weekend Group Courses

Mountain biking courses for young riders provide a whole range of development opportunities. It might be purely about improving trail riding skills, it might be about a whole range of outdoor skills or it might be about personal or team development. Whatever your needs we have one of the most experienced and highly qualified teams of instructors on hand to create and run courses just for you.

The following courses give an idea of what we can offer:

Core Skills (level 1)
This course covers the core mountain biking skills using a series of coaching session that get us right out into the Lake District mountains. We start day 1 with structured sessions to build balance and bike control, then progress onto technical climbing and descending as we head out for a good ride. Day 2 is a more flowing journey with some stops to develop the riders in whatever ways are needed. With small groups and expert instructors we can always be flexible in selecting the right terrain and right tuition to make this a great weekend for everyone.

Adventure Biking Skills (level 2)
If you want to offer real challenges and a chance to push the boundaries of wilderness skills, this is the course for you. Over the two days we cover more advanced riding techniques suitable for technical mountain terrain. In addition we look at navigation, maintenance, safety, equipment selection and a range of other topics. But these are not classroom sessions – we spend as much time out in the mountains, on our bikes, as possible.

Expedition (level 3)
Taking young mountain bikers into real wilderness for a multi-day, self-powered journey is an experience they will never forget. We can either offer this as a fully organised trip or, more suitable for youth development, we can give you a structured programme to guide them through the planning process. This will help them to find a route, design menus, select equipment and much more. We will then support the journey and make sure the group have a truly remarkable, but safe, adventure.

Leadership and Coaching (level 3)
For young riders who want to progress within a club, school group or as outdoor instructors in their own right, this course is a great introduction to the world of coaching and leading. This course can be flexed to suit the needs of the group, offering either a focus on the leadership syllabus of the SMBLA, the coaching syllabus of the CTC, or a combination of the two. The aim is to set up the students to become confident, skilled and inspiring leaders of the future.
