These mountain bike skills courses from the UK’s leading team of instructors will change your biking dramatically, in just one day. There’s a good reason why thousands of mtb enthusiasts have chosen CycleActive for their skills instruction over the last 10 years – we spend more time than any other mountain bike skills training company on research and course development – so we can bring you the latest techniques taught in the most effective way.
Course highlights:
- Intensive one-day courses with small groups guaranteed
- Achieve real results with our progressive coaching approach
- Work with the UK’s leading instructor team
- Personal feedback – so you keep improving after the course
Each course is carefully designed to give maximum improvement through a series of skills sessions, individual and group feedback then application of those skills to real trail situations. We have perfected this through our years of mtb skills instruction experience. Check out the CV’s of our team so you can get an idea of the level of coaching on offer.
Course Types and Overview:
Here’s a summary of our one-day courses – more detailed descriptions are further down the page:
Singletrack Skills
Level 1 – Learn to mountain bike the right way as we get you riding the trails with confidence and skill. Level 2 – Blast through berms, rollers and twisting terrain, master the art of line choice and ride with total control. Level 3 – Attack every section of the trail with new speed, fly through technical sections and build lightning fast reactions.
Jump, Pump and Drop
Level 2 – Master the manual and perfect your technique for flying off lips, drops, roots and jumps on any trail. Level 3 – clear tabletops, drop further and discover new ways to manual, pre-jump and pre-pump trail features.
Choosing a day or two-day package:
Many riders like to make a full weekend of their training – especially if you’re travelling to a new location – so we’ve planned some great combinations over full weekends to let you do this. For example, we often run Singletrack Skills 2 with Jump, Pump and Drop 2 for a full multi-skilled weekend. Or if your focus is on getting jumping sorted you can often do Jump, Pump and Drop 2 and 3 over a weekend instead.
Whatever skills you come to us with, from novice off-roader to regular mountain biker or elite racer, our comprehensive range of courses will take you to the next level.
Singletrack Skills Courses

We’ve spent years working through every skill progression, breaking down the complexities of how body, bike and trail interact – all so you don’t have to! Our instructors are experts at getting things across in simple, clear and easy to master sessions. The result is an amazingly fast process of improvement.
Singletrack MTB Skills Course - Level 1
If you’ve been riding for a while but not tried anything challenging, or are new to mountain biking – this is the course for you. Getting professional instruction early on means you learn the best ways to ride all parts of the trail, so your cornering, braking, flow through narrow or rocky terrain and overall bike control will get a huge boost in just one day. Get the most out of yourself and your bike with no bad habits!
Singletrack MTB Skills Course - Level 2
If you mountain bike often but just ride the trails, rather than pushing through every twist and turn, attacking tight lines on technical trails or taking real control on fast descents – this is the course for you. We work on body and foot positioning, vision training, balance, brake control and then get into the detail of high and low speed cornering, berms, loose or rocky terrain, pumping for grip and for speed and possibly other skills (depending on time and group progress). This is probably the best course you will ever buy to improve your trail centre riding.
Singletrack MTB Skills Course - Level 3
There is another step up from fast regular trail rider to the high speeds of the professional downhiller, 4X racer or pro XC rider. This comes from a combination of techniques that squeeze more speed out of every part of the trail, but also confidence and mental control. On this advanced mtb skills course we’ll work on pump, unweighting, vision, body control, traction control and apply these to a whole range of trail sections as we get you moving faster and faster.
Jump, Pump and Drop Courses

Jump, Pump and Drop Skills Course - Level 2
Drop-offs, lips, rollers and features that encourage you to get into the air are being built into more and more trails. The instruction on this course will have you floating the bike with confidence and style on any xc trail, including ways to perfect your manuals. We develop your body position and pumping techniques for perfect takeoffs, work with natural features for lift and consider landings on different trails and terrains.
Jump, Pump and Drop Skills Course - Level 3
Most mtb riders fly off lips or over tabletops without considering the many other ways to ride these features. With techniques right out of 4X and BMX racing we’ll show you how to increase speed, control and style as you cover pumped and pickup manuals, pre-jumping, pre-manualing and coaster manuals for tabletops or doubles. We’ll also look at how to increase height and control on bigger jumps. It’s the ultimate development course for handling trail jumps like a pro.

“We chose Chris Ford and the CycleActive instructors for our Olympic Talent Team Camp because of their infectious enthusiasm and unique brand of skills coaching. The training was pitched at exactly the right level for our riders who all made real progress during the weekend.”
Chris Furber, British Cycling Olympic Talent Coach.
“Just a few hours spent training with Chris Ford of CycleActive made me realise how much I have to learn… After a morning cycling with Ford I was flinging my bike and body round sharp corners and slippery descents, and climbing hills I wouldn’t even have attempted the day before.”
Alison Hamlett, Editor, Triathlete’s World magazine
Video Feedback and Online Review – New for 2011
On many of our courses we now use video to assist with your skills development. This is at the discretion of the instructor, as its use depends on where we are, the weather conditions and the requirements of the group. If you wish we can load video content onto our YouTube or Facebook pages so that you can review online, get additional feedback or ideas from our full coaching team, and benefit from your course for many months afterwards. You can also load up your own videos for us to give feedback on as you improve after the course – that’s all part of the service.
