Mountain Biking Courses

Photography
with Andy McCandlish

If you want to take great action photos, scenic biking shots and creative images to spice up your holiday or home photo albums, this Lake District based course is just for you.

Run in partnership by CycleActive and one of the UK’s biggest names in mountain bike photography, Andy McCandlish, this 3-day course will teach you everything you need to know to start taking great pictures. The course will aim to cover all of the following topics, plus others depending on the needs and interests of the group:

Composition – learning the rules and when to break them, moving around to get the right shot, correct framing techniques
Action – panning techniques, shutter speed settings and their effect, using timing and anticipation, how to use flash
Exposure – the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and film/chip sensitivity, when to trust your camera and when to take control yourself
Focus – getting focus right, making the most of autofocus
Scenic – techniques for creating great scenic bike pictures
Editing – reviewing pictures to see what works, and why

Andy McCandlish is the only mountain bike photographer to work for all four of the big name magazines – MBR, WMB, MBUK and Singletrack. He has a natural flair for photos and the ability to grab great shots while fitting in with the flow of the ride. This natural style makes him a real favourite for travel and adventure/epic ride photography, so expect to pick up lots of tips other than pure technical photographic information.

All courses are run in small groups of just 8 clients with one CycleActive guide (with experience of magazine photo-shoots) plus Andy. The aim is to get you taking pictures right away using some of the most inspiring natural biking terrain imaginable.

By working in small groups with advice and supervision from your instructors, then feeding back through evening slide shows, you’ll really be involved in the learning process. It’s quite an intensive course, with evening sessions on both Saturday and Sunday, but the photographic results should speak for themselves at the end of the day!
